Neglected States of India : North-East Region

Seven Sisters State is what the North-East states of India is termed as. The region comprises of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Sikkim. Entire region is bestowed with goodness of nature.

  • World's largest tea plantation - Assam
  • Wettest place in the world - Mawsynram, Meghalaya
  • Living root bridge - Cheerapunji, Meghalaya
  • Cleanest village in Asia - Mawlynnong, Meghalaya
  • Entire North-East region is classified in Global 200 ecoregion
  • Kaziranga National Park, a world heritage site
  • Highest literary rate in India

Having said all gracious qualities about the region why the region is not popular and underdeveloped?

Demographics

North-East region is widespread in total Area of 2,62,230 KM2 which is 8% of landmass in India and shares 4500 kM of international border. Total population in this region is 45,587,982 (4.5 crores approx) with population density of 170/km2. However most of border area is unprotected resulting illegal migrants from neighbouring countries. There is an estimate of over 5 million immigrants crossing borders illegally through North-East of India mostly from Bangladesh

Politics

Except Assam all other six states are lacking political presence in Lok Sabha (House of Common - Indian Assembly) having only 9 seats in total which is very low when compared to other states in India. Population density is one of the reason for this. Voices of the leaders from this regions are often unheard among the other majority members.

Isolation

Physical isolation of this region aggravated the negligence of this region from mainland India. North-East is connected through a small passage of land through the state of West Bengal only. Very little efforts have been made since independence for the development resulting in armed uprising in many parts of the region.

Commerce

Not many companies are set up in this region despite having abundance opportunities across the states. Government establishment are also very few which needs to be improvised for example- Arunachal Pradesh itself has plenty of water resources which can be used to generate electricity not only to fulfil the internal requirement but also can be exported to neighbouring countries. This region has the highest literary rate and most of the people commonly use English as a communicating language. However this human resources are forced to step out the region to work and earn a better livelihood. North-East is strategically an gateway to South-East Asia which is well connected through road way in countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia. Recently efforts are being made to develop this corridor by the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for tourism and trade through The India–Myanmar–Thailand trilateral highway announced in 2016.

I do believe North-East is better when compared to few decades ago which is true with the entire country. Perception of India has been changed from snake catching country to space catching country thanks to progression made through technology. But point to be noted it is the pace of development in mainland India and North-East region.

As it's said always younger generation are the future of the country, it becomes the responsibility of the youth from the region to take up the lost cause and take the region's development at par with the rest of the country.

  1. Being from the north-east, I have always wondered why this part of the country is so neglected. Putting the blaming on politicians and the ignorance of the people of the rest of India towards us, will only make us further isolated. It is as much up to the so called 'mainlanders' to embrace us as brothers and sisters, as much as it is up to us to work towards the upliftment of the northeast, and not just play the blame game. I do see the situation becoming better slowly, and I am positive that we will progress hand in hand with the other states, and play a huge part in the upliftment of the nation as a whole.
